Shopping at Costco can either save you a ton of money… or make your grocery bill skyrocket real fast. Those giant carts and bulk sizes are no joke.
Over the years, I’ve learned you need a plan before you walk in. Otherwise, you’ll leave with a kayak, a 3-pack of sweatpants, and no real food for dinner.
So here’s our real-life Costco shopping list on a budget — the items I buy over and over to feed my family, save money, and still keep things pretty healthy.

🥚 1. Eggs (Huge Savings for Protein)
Costco eggs are one of my favorite healthy Costco finds. We go through a lot of eggs at our house — breakfasts, baking, and quick dinners.
Buying them in bulk costs way less per egg than the grocery store. If you have the fridge space, this is an easy win.
We use them for:
- Scrambled eggs
- Egg sandwiches
- Pancakes and muffins
- Breakfast for dinner nights
🍗 2. Rotisserie Chicken
This is one of those true Costco must haves. That famous rotisserie chicken stretches into several meals for us.
One chicken usually turns into:
- Dinner the first night
- Chicken salad or wraps
- Soup or casserole
It saves me from cooking meat from scratch, which is a lifesaver on busy days.
🧀 3. Block Cheese (Not Shredded)
Shredded cheese costs more and has added stuff to keep it from clumping. I buy the big blocks and shred it myself.
It lasts longer and saves money — perfect for a family grocery list on a budget.
We use it for:
- Tacos
- Pasta dishes
- Homemade pizza
- Grilled cheese
🥣 4. Oatmeal
Big bags of oatmeal at Costco are super cheap per serving. This is one of the best items for a weekly grocery list on a budget.
Oatmeal is filling and healthy, and you can change it up so it doesn’t get boring.
Easy ideas:
- Brown sugar and cinnamon
- Peanut butter and banana
- Baked oatmeal for busy mornings
🍎 5. Apples
We go through fruit fast, and apples hold up well. Costco bags are a great deal compared to buying small bags at the regular store.
They’re perfect for:
- School lunches
- Snacks with peanut butter
- Chopped into oatmeal
🥦 6. Frozen Vegetables
Fresh veggies can go bad fast. Frozen veggies from Costco are cheaper per bag and last forever in the freezer.
This helps us eat healthier without wasting food.
Our favorites:
- Broccoli
- Mixed veggies
- Green beans
- Stir-fry blends
🍞 7. Bread (Freeze the Extra)
The bread packs usually come with two loaves. We keep one out and freeze the other.
That way we’re not running to the store mid-week, and it works great for:
- Sandwiches
- Toast
- French toast
🥜 8. Peanut Butter
Big jars of peanut butter are way cheaper at Costco. It’s great protein and super filling.
We use it for:
- Sandwiches
- Oatmeal
- Smoothies
- Apples and bananas
🥩 9. Ground Beef (Portion and Freeze)
Buying meat in bulk can be a big saver if you split it up right away. I divide it into meal-sized bags and freeze them flat.
This makes dinner planning easier and keeps us from grabbing takeout.
🍚 10. Rice
Rice is one of the cheapest foods you can buy, and the giant Costco bags last a long time.
It’s perfect for:
- Stir fry
- Burrito bowls
- Soup
- Stretching small amounts of meat
🧴 11. Cooking Oil
Oil is one of those things you don’t think about… until you run out. Costco sizes are a better price per ounce, and it lasts a long time.
🍫 Chocolate Chips (Big Bag = Big Savings)
If you bake at all, this is one of the best deals in the store. The big bags of chocolate chips at Costco are way cheaper per cup than the small grocery store bags.
And let’s be honest… chocolate chips aren’t just for baking. I had a video take off on me being shocked at the price of chocolate chips recently.. but they are still cheaper at a wholesale club I’ve foun then a regular store, and you want to make sure they are made with real cocoa.
We use them for:
- Cookies and muffins
- Pancakes
- Homemade granola bars
- A small handful for a sweet treat
They store well in the pantry, and having them on hand makes it easy to whip up a quick homemade dessert instead of buying pricier packaged sweets.
🥗 13. Salad Kits
These are one of my favorite healthy Costco finds for busy weeks. They’re more expensive than plain lettuce, but still cheaper than takeout.
When life is crazy, a salad kit plus chicken makes a fast, healthy dinner.
🧃 14. Yogurt (Big Tubs or Multipacks)
Yogurt is great for breakfast or snacks. The big tubs are cheaper per serving, and you can add your own fruit or granola.
🍿 15. Popcorn
Popcorn is one of the cheapest snacks out there. The big boxes of microwave popcorn or giant bags of kernels go a long way.
It’s our go-to movie night snack instead of expensive chips.
How I Keep My Costco Trip on Budget
Here’s my simple rule:
👉 I go in with a list and a plan for meals.
Before I shop, I think through:
- What dinners we’re having this week
- What breakfasts and lunches we need
- What we already have at home
That way, my Costco shopping list on a budget stays focused on real food, not impulse buys.
Costco can absolutely fit into a family grocery list on a budget — you just have to shop with a purpose.
And if you stick to simple, filling foods like these, you’ll stretch your dollars a whole lot further.
