As much as I love the warmer weather, there’s one thing I don’t love: that first wave of ants marching into the kitchen like they own the place.

I’ve got you covered if you’re tired of dealing with ants every spring or summer. These natural ant remedies are ones I’ve personally used here on the homestead — and most of them use stuff you already have in your pantry.

Here are five tried-and-true ways to get rid of ants naturally without toxic sprays or pricey traps.

How to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home Naturally (and on a Budget!)

1. Vinegar Spray = Trail Destroyer

Ants follow scent trails, and white vinegar messes them up completely. It’s like deleting their GPS.

What to Do:

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
  • Spray it on baseboards, windowsills, countertops — anywhere you see ant traffic.
  • Wipe dry after a few minutes (ants love moisture, even if it’s vinegar-y!).

Real Life Note:

Last summer, I sprayed this around our back door daily for a week, and it completely wiped out the ant trail. Bonus: It also cut through the sticky spots my kids left behind.

2. Natural Barriers Ants Won’t Cross

Ants hate strong smells and powdery textures. You can use these as natural “no-entry” zones.

Options:

  • Cinnamon: Sprinkle along windowsills and doorways. Smells amazing too!
  • Baby powder or chalk: Draw a line near their entry point — ants won’t cross it.
  • Peppermint oil spray: Mix 10 drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle.

Real Life Tip:

Although the peppermint spray didn’t fully stop the ants for me, it did make my pantry smell like Christmas, so I kept using it while I sealed entry points.

3. DIY Ant Bait with Borax

This is a little sneaky — and very effective. You make a simple ant bait that they carry back to their colony, ending the problem at its source.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 tsp borax
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1–2 tsp water

Mix into a paste and place on a piece of cardboard near the ant trail. Ants will swarm it, then disappear within a few days.

⚠️ Safety Note:

Borax is natural, but not safe for kids or pets to ingest. Place it somewhere out of reach and label it clearly.

4. Seal the Deal (Literally)

Even the best natural remedy won’t work if ants can still find a way in.

Checklist:

  • Check windows and doors for tiny cracks
  • Seal them with caulk or weather stripping
  • Store open food in airtight containers
  • Clean counters daily, rinse dishes, take out trash

Homestead Tip:

Once we started sealing our compost bin and clearing out the dog food crumbs under the fridge (whoops), the ants backed off quickly.

5. Boiling Water = Outdoor Colony Destroyer

If you spot an anthill outside near your foundation, grab the kettle.

What to Do:

  • Boil a pot of water
  • Carefully pour it over the mound
  • Repeat for 2–3 days if needed

It’s simple, free, and pesticide-free — but please be careful with pets or kids around.

Bonus Tip: Stay Consistent

Ants are persistent. Even with natural solutions, you may need to reapply sprays or traps daily at first. Keep at it for a week, and you’ll notice a major drop in activity.

Wrapping Up

Ants may be tiny, but they’re mighty persistent. Luckily, with these natural remedies, a little patience, and consistency, you can reclaim your home — without toxic sprays or expensive store-bought traps.
