Sunflowers are among my favorite flowers in the home and on the homestead. Who doesn’t feel happier when they see sunflowers? Their bright, cheerful blooms just scream joy. They were one of the first flowers I tried from seed. This year, we planted sunflower seeds in two separate areas. I made a path next to the greenhouse and one out of the way back.
Our vision’s always been to look back at our pond at the back field and see a row of sunflowers. In the past, we tried and failed because the soil got too dry, but this year, I think, is the year! ( I’ll update this post when it does happen and on my TikTok page!)
.With some creative ideas and a little frugal thinking, you can make stunning sunflower arrangements for your home without overspending. Let’s take a look at how you can bring sunshine into your home for less money.
Here’s me making one arrangement from a small batch of sunflowers I grew last year! You can also follow me on TikTok!
Where to Find Affordable Sunflowers
First things first, let’s start with finding the sunflowers. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to enjoy their beauty. Here are a few budget-friendly options:
- Farmers’ markets: Local farmers often sell sunflowers much cheaper than the big-box grocery stores. Plus, they’re usually fresher!
- Pick-your-own flower farms: These farms often have rows and rows of sunflowers where you can pick your own stems. It’s also a fun family activity!
- Shop your home first: Look through your cabinets for pitchers, mason jars, or bowls you can repurpose. There’s no rule that your vase must be fancy or brand new.
- Mix real and faux: Can’t find fresh sunflowers? No problem! High-quality faux sunflowers can look just as stunning and last forever.
- Pick multipurpose items: Invest in versatile decor pieces like wooden trays or mason jars that you can use year-round.
- Grow your own: Planting sunflower seeds is super easy and incredibly rewarding if you have a little patience. A small pack of seeds can grow dozens of flowers.
- You can grab sunflower packets for cheap at Dollar Tree and Dollar General. You can also try your local library to see if they participate in the FREE SEED program. Yep, then you’ll have sunflowers for FREE!
If you need them quickly, grocery stores sometimes have affordable bouquets, too! Just compare prices before buying. With a bit of planning, you’ll have plenty of sunflowers to work with.
How To Keep Sunflowers Alive In A Vase
Sunflowers are pretty resilient, but a little extra care can help them last even longer in your vase. Follow these simple tips to keep your blooms looking fresh and vibrant:
- Trim the stems: Before placing your sunflowers in a vase, cut at a slight angle about an inch off the bottom of each stem. This increases their ability to absorb water.
- Change the water daily: Sunflowers thrive in clean water, so replace it daily to avoid bacteria build-up.
- Add flower food: If the flowers came with a packet of plant food, use it! No flower food? A splash of lemon juice and a teaspoon of sugar work as a DIY alternative.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight: While sunflowers love the sun in nature, intense heat can make cut flowers wilt faster. Place your vase in a cool, shaded spot.
- Remove wilting petals and leaves: If you notice any leaves or petals starting to wilt, gently pluck them off to keep the arrangement fresh and tidy.
With these easy tricks, sunflowers should stay beautiful for up to a week or more.
Add a Touch of Sunshine to the Living Room
Everyone gathers in Your living room, so make it inviting by placing a sunflower arrangement on your coffee or side table. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Mason jars are a classic choice for a farmhouse look. To save time and money, pick up a set of sturdy, vintage-style jars.
- If fresh sunflowers aren’t readily available, add a bundle of faux flowers. Faux flowers like these look super realistic.
- Bonus tip: Tie some twine or burlap around the jar for extra rustic charm.
Arrange 5-7 sunflowers in your jar, and voilà! You’ve got a cozy and affordable centerpiece.
Dining Room Centerpieces Made Easy
Regarding your dining table, a sunflower centerpiece can instantly liven up dinners with family or friends. Stick to these budget-friendly ideas:
- Use a decorative wooden tray or crate as the base for your arrangement. The rustic vibe ties in beautifully with farmhouse decor.
- Combine your sunflowers with a few everyday kitchen herbs like rosemary or thyme for a fresh, fragrant arrangement.
- Don’t forget fun extras like faux mini pumpkins or apples to add layers to your centerpiece. Many of these are available as affordable mix-and-match sets.
Your guests will think you spent hours putting it all together, but we’ll keep your secret. It’s easy and inexpensive!
Simple Bathroom Details
Even a small bathroom can feel special with a bit of sunflower love. A single bloom in a tiny vase is all you need.
- Look for a petite ceramic or glass bud vase to hold one or two flowers.
- Place it on a narrow windowsill or a floating shelf if you’re short on counter space.
It’s such a simple detail, but it’s guaranteed to make you smile whenever you reach for the soap.

It’s the perfect combination of farmhouse chic and soothing, natural vibes.
Freshen Up Your Kitchen with Sunflowers
Who says your kitchen doesn’t deserve a little flower power? A sunflower centerpiece on your kitchen island is a great way to keep things bright and cozy.
