Tips to Calm a Mini Pig: A Beginner’s Guide to Raising Happy and Relaxed Piglets

Bringing home a mini piglet is an exciting adventure, but ensuring their well-being and happiness is crucial. Like any pet, mini pigs can experience anxiety and stress, so it’s important to know how to calm a mini pig.

I’ve loved pigs since I was a kid in 4-H. But I always wanted one to live in my house. My husband surprised me one year before my birthday and got me a mini pig! He even let me keep it in the house with our German Shepard dog! Seven years later, I own three mini pigs, and you know what? It may be time for another 😉

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore practical tips to calm and soothe your mini pig, focusing on owners of baby pigs. From understanding common behaviors to practical training methods, let’s create a nurturing environment for your adorable piglet.

Understanding Common Mini Pig Behaviors

To effectively calm a mini pig, it’s essential to understand their natural behaviors. Mini pigs are intelligent and social animals that require mental and physical stimulation. Some common behaviors include rooting, playing, and foraging.

Providing them with plenty of enrichment activities, such as puzzle and treat-dispensing toys, can help alleviate anxiety and keep them engaged.

If you find no matter what you are trying when they are in the house to keep them entertained, the best thing for you to do is get them outside.

Sometimes this means they may want to be outside more than in your home, which is okay. After a year and a half, I transitioned my mini pig Bentely to full-time outside. You can read how the transition went here.

Creating a Safe and Comfortable Environment

A safe and comfortable environment is crucial in calming a mini pig. Ensure they have a cozy and secure space to rest, with bedding that provides warmth and softness. Give them a dedicated area to root around and be a pig, such as a secure yard or a designated rooting box.

A suitable environment can help your piglet feel secure, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

If you hear your pig make a bark or arf sound, it’s because it was startled. Go around slowly and introduce new areas and people slowly. Keep in mind pigs have terrible eyesight but a fantastic sense of smell.

Building a Strong Connection

Establishing a strong bond with your new piglet is key to their overall well-being. Spend quality time with your piglet, holding them on your chest or lap while watching television or including them in a nap or bedtime routine.

If you immediately try to pick up your mini pig the first day or two after they are home, they will have a more challenging time trusting you. Let them consistently come to you.

This means you can give them lots of treats and attention during those first few weeks. If you are new to bringing home a baby mini pig, check out my guide here.

These moments of closeness help them feel safe, loved, and secure. Allow your piglet to get used to your scent and gradually introduce them to other family members and pets.

Pick up a few blankets from your local thrift store; they love going deep under those blankets to feel safe and calm.

Effective Training Methods

Training your mini pig teaches them essential commands and helps alleviate anxiety by providing mental stimulation. Positive reinforcement training techniques work best with mini pigs. The treat dispenser ball was my pig’s favorite.

Use treats, praise, and gentle encouragement to reward desired behaviors. Patience and consistency are essential when training your piglet, as they may take time to grasp commands and routines.

I harnessed and trained my mini pigs and started as early as possible. This was great for taking them for a walk in the yard or even letting them out in the yard, but being able to take them inside when I wanted, not when they wanted.

Handling a Frightened Piglet

Mini pigs, especially baby pigs, can quickly get scared or anxious. If your piglet becomes frightened, it’s essential to remain calm and reassuring. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises that may startle them further.

Speak softly and soothingly, using treats or their favorite toys to distract and comfort them. Remember, building trust takes time, so be patient and understanding.

Also, if your mini pig is starting to nip or lunge at you, you must correct the behavior. A firm tap on the snout and a no will help stop bad behavior.

Comfortable Transport

Transporting a mini pig can be stressful for both the piglet and the owner. To keep your piglet calm during travel, consider using natural remedies like lavender oil or calming music inside the vehicle. Ensure proper ventilation and secure the carrier to prevent unnecessary movement.
