There’s something about the act of dreaming big that makes the hard work feel possible. When my husband and I started our debt-free adventure, we didn’t just need a plan—we needed a vision. A crystal-clear picture of the life we wanted, one worth budgeting for, saying no to extra expenses, and cutting up credit cards.
Spoiler alert? That vision, paired with discipline, helped us pay off over $55,000 in debt and completely transform our relationship with money. And no, this wasn’t about overnight miracles or secret financial hacks.
It was about consistency, empowerment, and visualizing where we wanted to be. This is why I’m a huge believer in creating a money vision board—it’s not just pretty pictures and random goals; it’s your dream life in financial technicolor.
What is a Money Vision Board?
A money vision board isn’t just another cute Pinterest craft. It’s a tool—a visual roadmap to help you stay focused on your financial goals. Think of it as a mix of all your money dreams stitched together—a paid-off student loan notice, a Pinterest-worthy vacation spot, a cozy home you’ll own outright.
These images, words, and visuals help connect your why to your financial decisions. Because trust me, when you’re skipping takeout for the third week in a row or deciding between your budget or spontaneously buying that adorable sweater…you’ll need a big reason to stay on track.
How It All Started for Me
When we were drowning in debt, I felt overwhelmed just thinking about our finances. Standing in the kitchen with a stack of bills in one hand and a calculator in the other, I wondered, “How are we going to pay off all this and still have a life?”
One night, in full-on frustration mode, I took out some old magazines, grabbed scissors, and decided to get my head in the game. ( Can you tell I’m a 90s kid? I would do this for fun in high school!)
I started cutting pictures of what I wanted for our future—a serene little house, words like “freedom” and “debt-free,” kids smiling on vacations, a stack of emergency funds sitting happily in the bank.
The next morning, when that board was pinned up on our wall, something clicked.
Every financial decision from that point on led me closer to making that vision a reality.
How to Create Your Own Money Vision Board
The best part about this? There’s no wrong way to do it. But here’s how I recommend starting.
Step 1: Get Real About Your Money Goals
Sit down and ask yourself this question honestly—what would your life feel like if you were debt-free? What do you want your finances to enable? Write it down. And get specific. Do you want to pay off $15,000 in credit card debt in two years? Save a 3-month emergency fund? Finally, take that dream family trip. Keep these goals tangible.
*New to budgeting? Consider the bi-weekly savings challenge.
Step 2: Gather Inspiration
Grab magazines, Pinterest boards, or screenshot pictures from Instagram. Find visuals that light you up—a cabin in the mountains, big, bold words like “Debt-Free Life,” or quotes that remind you of your power, like “Strong women fix their crowns AND their budgets.” Don’t hold back—these images should feel deeply personal and inspiring.
Step 3: Assemble the Board
Use a corkboard, poster, or even a digital Canva design if paper’s not your thing. Arrange your images and phrases in a way that’s visually pleasing—you want to want to stare at it every day. This is where you reflect your dream debt-free life—a house, zero-balance credit card statements, a relaxing trip, or simply the word “FREEDOM.”
Step 4: Put it in Plain Sight
Pin it up somewhere you’ll see it daily. Ours lived right near our dining table. No ignoring those goals when they were front and center during budgeting nights.
…Oh, and there’s no shame in adding a bit of glitter or washi tape—it’s your board.

Empower Yourself to Break Free
We all know financial empowerment starts with education and a plan, but the emotional part? That’s where a good vision board comes in. It’s a reminder that you’re choosing this hard yet rewarding path of saying no to today’s unnecessary extras so you can say YES to tomorrow’s dreams.
And ladies—yes, I mean you—you deserve to feel in control of your finances. Whether your budget’s a scratchy Excel sheet or an artfully decorated bullet journal, no one is better equipped to handle your financial life than YOU.
I learned this firsthand when I stopped avoiding my bank account balance and started actually managing it. It’s one of the most freeing things I’ve done.
Maybe you’re a single mom wanting to give your kids more opportunities without debt hovering overhead. Or you’re someone looking to finally invest in a future that you own 100%. Wherever you’re starting—your vision board can go there with you.
Quick Strategies to Crush Debt
Since we’re talking financial glow-ups, here are a few strategies we closely followed back when paying off our own debt. ( I have a lot more financial articles on my blog too)
- Debt Snowball Method
Start with your smallest debt while paying minimums on everything else, then roll those payments into the next debt once that one’s knocked out. It’s a huge confidence boost seeing small wins add up to big ones. - Budget Dates, Not Budget Dreads
My husband and I stopped dreading finances by making budgeting nights feel less awful. Pizza + spreadsheets = not as painful as it sounds. - Side Hustle Your Way to Freedom
From selling clothes online to picking up freelance gigs, those extra bits of cash went straight toward our debt snowball. My side hustle started with extreme couponing. - Celebrate Small Wins
Every $1,000 milestone was a reason to smile (on a budget, of course). - No-Spending Challenges
A month of spending only on essentials can help you recalibrate and progress. This was a game changer for us when we bought our farmhouse.
Share Your Own Journey
Everyone’s money story is different, but we all have dreams and debt to tackle. Whether it’s paying off that last car loan or finally taking control after years of just hoping things would get better—your story is worth sharing.
Pin your vision board, your wins, or even your struggles! Community is everything in a #DebtFreeJourney. I’d love to see your boards and hear how they’re bringing you closer to manifesting the life you deserve. Trust me—the work is worth it.
